I was scheduled to work tonight.
It’s funny – I was supposed to work Christmas, take our anniversary off, then I was supposed to work New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
My schedule followed me – I ended up spending Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day in a hospital, just like I was supposed to.
And the one day we weren’t in the hospital – our anniversary – was my one day out.
We have been married for 6 New Year’s now – and each one of them has been in a different state:
2008-2009: On our honeymoon in Washington – the power went out during a scary storm and we went to bed early
2009-2010: We stayed up this year, at a party at Aunt Tina’s and Uncle Mike’s in New York
2010-2011: Hawaii with Nate’s whole family! I don’t think anyone stayed up until midnight…
2011-2012: Driving back from Oregon to Vegas after Christmas break – we stopped for the night in Sacramento, CA. We stayed up and welcomed the New Year in our FREE, fancy hotel room
2012-2013: Las Vegas – our first New Year’s not traveling. I don’t know if Nate stayed up, but I worked that night, so I watched the fireworks from the top floor of the hospital.
2013-2014: Children’s Hospital of Colorado, Denver! We ordered Papa Johns, and watched a movie (The Way Way back) until we were ready to watch the ball drop.
We are looking forward to 2014.
It’s the year we become parents, Nate becomes a Dr., we move to a new place –
It’s been our beacon year for the last 4 years.
2013 probably wasn’t our favorite year. There were a lot of good times, but it was hard too.
I worked the night shift all year. I enjoyed my job, but working nights wasn’t super easy for me – I missed a many, many days and nights of sleep in 2013.
We lived with my parents and 2 little sisters from August 2012 – August 2013. We enjoyed spending time with them, but it also had it’s challenges.
Nate’s rotations weren’t too terrible in 2013, until August, when he up and left me from mid-August until the beginning of December.
And then getting our diagnosis in December and the surgery – 2013 hasn’t been without it’s downs.
We had a lot of ups too, though. We drove from Las Vegas to Oregon in April, stopping to spend a few days in San Francisco, and had a ton of fun there, and visiting Nate’s family.
In July we spent a week on the coast for Nate’s family reunion. It was there that we found out we were going to have a BABY.
In October we went to New York to spend the weekend with my family and tell them about our little bundle of JOY.
The first 20 weeks of our pregnancy were wonderful and exciting, even though we were apart most of the time.
We drove to Oklahoma when Nate rotated out there, and took 3 days to get there, stopping at the Grand Canyon. Then at the end of the month we went to Nate’s brother Glen’s home in Texas for Thanksgiving, and then to Kathryn’s family’s ranch where Nate got to go hunting and got a deer.
Overall it was a good year –
but we are super excited for 2014 and all that it has in store for us!
