For the past 2 weeks Calvin has been on caffeine (for his central apnea) and steroids (for his inflamed upper airway).
Both of these meds have some pretty gnarly side effects that basically lead to a screaming baby all. the. time.
Except Calvin can’t really scream because his airway is too flimsy, and if he tries he just stops breathing and turns blue.
So we have been giving him meds to help him breathe that make him so upset that he stops breathing.
This was particularly frustrating to me, and several times I tried to talk Nate into just stopping all the stinking meds!
He was convinced that Calvin would indeed die if we discontinued his meds, and since he has a few extra years of medical training than I do (and now he’s a fancy Dr. and all), we kept on with the meds.
Well, today we got the OK from our Pulmonologist that as long as we keep him on his ICU monitor 24/7 we can start to wean those meds.
