The sun rose yesterday morning, and this morning as well, despite my drama.
Sunday night Calvin started to breathe on his own again.
He had a few de-sats, but nothing major.
Yesterday morning his chest x-ray looked good.
It had been not so great since the vent, but percussion therapy and antibiotics had finally cleared up his lungs.
He was also very awake, so at 1 pm the Dr. said “now or never” and pulled out his breathing tube.
Earlier in the morning, Nate had gone home to shower when the Dr. came in to talk about pulling the tube.
She said we had done all we could do, and waiting any longer was just going to put Calvin at more risk for infection, collapsed lung, etc.
So we just had to see now what Calvin wanted to do.
She said she was about 80% sure this would work, and Calvin would do well.
But there was a chance it might not.
She wanted me to be aware.
I was already acutely aware.
It’s been 12 hours and so far he is doing well!
No major desats and no periods where he’s forgotten to breathe!
He is on a high flow nasal cannula, which means there is basically a windstorm going into his nose reminding him to breathe.
Over the next week days we will work on weaning him off of that, and continue weaning him off of the narcotics.
We are not out of the woods yet, but things are starting to look up!
We are so proud of our tough little man!!!
